THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Jim Furyk's clutch, five-foot birdie putt at the 18th hole Sunday enabled him to hold off Graeme McDowell and win the $5.75 million Chevron World Challenge at Sherwood Country Club.
Furyk's remarkable weekend rounds of 10-under 67-67 added up to a 13-under total of 275, worth a one-shot victory over McDowell. Furyk picked up the winner's check of $1.35 million.
"Honestly, this week was a stepping stone," Furyk said. "Get one under your belt and carry it over to next year."
Furyk, who began the final day tied for fifth, two shots out of the lead, was the steadiest in the elite, 18-player field which competed in the last, officially sanctioned PGA Tour event of 2009.
McDowell's two-under 70 and 12- under total of 276 was better than everyone in the field except for Furyk. Trailing by two shots, McDowell needed to hole out from the fairway at the 18th to catch Furyk and he came close, stopping the ball about six feet away, but had to settle for a birdie.
Padraig Harrington and Lee Westwood both shot 70 and tied for third at 11-under 277. Stewart Cink closed with a 68 and finished tied for fifth at nine-under 279 along with Zach Johnson (67), Sean O'Hair (70) and Ian Poulter (71.).
