Farewell, until next year

The campers say goodbye to the TWLC as they wrap up their week

As the last day of the Summer Academy comes to a close, the campers celebrate the great week they've spent in Southern California.

The celebration began last night as the campers gathered around a campfire where they enjoyed s'mores, watched skits and were entertained by a fun song produced by two campers, Tevin and Jacob.

During the day, each class worked hard, adding the final touches to their projects as they prepared to show off their accomplishments to their parents and peers. For the last hour of camp, the parents were invited to the TWLC to walk around the classrooms and get a feel for what their students were doing during their week at summer camp.

It's great to see friendships form between kids that may have never met each other if it weren't for the Summer Academy. The beat-boxing duo of Jacob from Fort Mead in Maryland and Tevin from San Diego, exchanged phone numbers, as did many other campers, to make sure they keep in contact once they return to their respective homes.

"I had so much fun I forgot to miss my family!" said Makayla from Maryland while talking with one of her camp teachers.

At the realization that today was the last day of camp, San Diego resident, Victoria, expressed her sadness through the look on her face. When asked why such a sad face she replied, "I don't want camp to be over." A smile slowly came back to her face when she realized, "at least I get to come back for two more years!"

Working intently on his video game, Marcel from Los Angeles, mentioned, "I wish I could stay longer at camp" but is glad that he can take home his video game and continue working on it there.

Over in Comparative Zoology, California resident Isabella giggled with lab partner and friend Natalia as they dissected a pig. "Dissecting has been my favorite part of camp," said Isabella. "Well that and getting to hang out with Natalia again." The two had been friends before Natalia moved to Washington. Neither of them knew they were both coming to the same summer camp and have had a blast reconnecting this week.

When it was time to say goodbye, it was clear that each and every camper enjoyed their time here and will cherish this experience forever.
