Junior Golf Team

It is time to apply for the 2012 Tiger Woods Foundation National Junior Golf Team (TWFNJGT) that will represent the Tiger Woods Foundation at the Callaway Junior World Junior Golf Championships in July.

2012 TWFNJGT Requirements

The Tiger Woods Foundation National Junior Golf Team (TWFNJGT) was originally created -- in recognition of Tiger's work with underserved youth -- when the Junior World Golf Championships granted 18 permanent exemptions to the Foundation. "These exemptions create opportunities to enhance the growth of junior golfers through international competition," Earl Woods said.

The Tiger Woods Foundation is an educational foundation that offers other non-profit organizations grants for education and year-round mentoring and tutoring programs. The Foundation is proud of the accomplishments of the Tiger Woods Foundation National Junior Golf Team and its achievements over the past decade. Since its inception, members of the TWFNJGT have gone on to receive partial or full college scholarships at institutions such as Brown, Duke, UCLA, Texas Southern, Princeton, Notre Dame, Wake Forest and the University of Tulsa, to name a few.

Each junior golfer applying for a spot on the team must meet all the requirements and submit all the documentation in order to be considered. If anything is missing, your application is considered incomplete and will not be accepted. Once all the applications have been received, the committee will review applications and select the team members.

In 2012, Tiger Woods Foundation will receive one exemption per age division (7-17) per gender (10 total exemptions). Therefore, the majority of our team will need to qualify for Junior Worlds on their own in order to be considered for the team. Please go to the Junior World website to find out how your age division can apply for acceptance to the tournament and where your local qualifiers are. Even though you qualify for the tournament on your own, you will still need to apply to the Tiger Woods Foundation National Junior Golf Team by following the instructions below in order to be considered for the TWFNJGT.

  • You must live within the United States.

  • You must be at least 7 years old by July 10, 2012.

  • You must not have reached your 18th birthday by July 13, 2012.

  • You must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. (Please submit your most recent report card). Weighted GPA scores are accepted for those in advanced classes.

  • You must have a verifiable USGA Handicap Index (Please submit a copy of card).

  • You must submit a letter from your principal or dean of schools verifying your GPA, as well as a character reference.

  • You must submit a current tournament resume, which includes your current Handicap Index, tournaments played, your scores and the number of participants in the field.

  • You must perform and document 40 hours of community/volunteer service (does not have to be golf-related). All hours must be completed by July 10, 2012.

  • You must submit contact information for you and your parents/guardians (names, address, phone numbers, email addresses).

  • You must submit a recent photograph of yourself.

  • You may submit any letters of recommendation from your golf coaches, teachers and adult mentors.

  • Please submit any extracurricular activities you are involved with (sports, volunteer and/or mentoring groups, clubs, etc.)

  • You must download the 2012 Application Form. All applicants must fill out the Contact Information section.

  • All applicants must submit an essay as to why they would be a good representative for the TWFNJGT.

Please note: If it comes down to choosing between two children of the same gender, same age group, same GPA and equal number of extracurricular activities, then priority will be given to past team members.

The deadline to receive your completed application is Feb. 25, 2012.

Please mail your application to:

Testimonials

Mason Short: 2008-09

I want to share with you a picture of me signing my national letter of intent with the University of Maryland at College Park. It has been really a dream of mine to play at Maryland since before high school, and I know a lot of people have helped me along the way. I want to thank the Tiger Woods Foundation for supporting me and motivating me to work hard in golf, school and my community. Being selected to the TW National Junior Golf Team is something I will never forget. I was so proud to have made the team and represent Tiger Woods and the Foundation. It inspired me to continue to work hard on the golf course and the classroom. It was the first time I really started getting envolved in community service as well, and I have continued to be involved in many community service activities at my high school.

When I make up my college golf bio, I plan to include "member of the Tiger Woods Foundation National Junior Golf Team" because it is something I am still proud of today. Again, thank you and the TWF for giving me that opportunity because it was part of the series of events that helped me realize my dream of playing golf in college. If you talk to Tiger, tell him I said, "Thanks, and I am working everyday to live my life with integrity, honesty, discipline and responsibility."

Max Hagar: 2010-11
Kyohei Itamura: 2008-10

I honestly was a bit afraid being the new member to the team in 2008, and I didn't know if I could fit in that well. However, it didn't take long for me to meet and become friends with my fellow teammates at Junior World. I think that's what's so great about the members of the Tiger Woods Foundation National Junior Golf Team. Besides the fact that they are proven student-athletes, I discovered that they are, simply, role models for their peers. During the first meeting, I remember just sitting and listening in awe to many of the members, who, not to mention, are much younger than I am, talking about their community-service projects that they have done in the past year. From holding junior golf clinics to weaving baskets for third-world countries, they amazed me for how authentically they cared about just doing what they can to make a difference for others. I am proud to be part of such a special family that inspires students to enjoy giving back to those who appreciate that extra hand.

Erica Jackson: 2008, '10-11

It was a great experience being a member of the Tiger Woods Foundation National Junior Golf Team because I don't usually get to play golf with anyone other than my sister. I don't have any other friends at school or in my community who play golf, so it is nice to finally meet other young people who understand and play golf. I also love wearing the TWF uniforms to golf tournaments because people are always interested in knowing more about me and how I was so fortunate to be a member of the team.

Myah Jackson: 2008-11

It is awesome to be a part of a team in a sport that can be lonely at times. I love to make new friends, but it is hard to do in golf because there isn't much time to talk. The Tiger Woods Foundation Team has helped me make "golf friends" who I look forward to seeing at different tournaments. Having "golf friends" makes serious competition fun!
