TWLC-DC Career Orientation Program

COP

The TWLC-DC Capitol Hill campus will run various programs during daytime hours during the academic year, including serving all ninth-grade Chavez students with a class dedicated to integrated technology research and presentation. In addition, local elementary and middle schools will be selected to participate in custom hands-on science activities and local educators will be invited to attend integrated science and technology workshops, as well as special topic presentations.

TWLC-DC Afterschool - Career Exploration Program

After school, the TWLC helps middle and high school students recognize their potential and identify their interests through a hands-on, authentic learning experience in the Career Exploration Program (CEP). During each seven-week session, student members may choose to learn about a career by selecting from more than 10 different career options. Thematic classrooms include: Communications, engineering, Video and Film Production, Robotics, Oceanography and Alternative Energy. The curriculum gives students multiple opportunities to learn about careers by utilizing the computer and completing a hands-on project. For example, students enrolled in Video Production will use the latest filmmaking software and equipment to create their very own short film. In addition, students will be introduced to the many career opportunities within the field of video production.

CEP staff also provide opportunities for students throughout Washington, D.C., to learn about the benefits of TWLC membership through a series of field trips intended to support school-based programs that target underrepresented populations of students and encourage them to pursue a college education. During the field trip, students have the opportunity to explore careers and participate in an introductory college preparation workshop and a select variety of hands-on experiments with a science, math or technology emphasis. The objective of the field trip is to provide participants with the knowledge of an additional resource that supports them with their future plans while giving them the understanding of what they need to do to become a TWLC member.

The two Washington, D.C., campuses are located at the Cesar Chavez Public Charter School (TWLC-Capitol Hill Campus) in Ward 6 and the Cesar Chavez Public Charter School (TWLC-Parkside Campus) in Ward 7.

To Apply: The Career Exploration Program (CEP) is open to students throughout the DC metro area. CEP runs at Parkside, Monday-Thursday, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and at Capitol Hill, Monday-Friday, from 3-6 p.m. If you're interested in applying to the CEP, please download the application forms for Parkside or Capitol Hill and follow all steps completely. Acceptance to the CEP is based on your report card and personal statement.
